Tale of Two Kitchens

07.06.2011

As you might expect, a kitchen remodeling wish list generally includes some of the latest innovations in food prep and cooking – a built-in grill, induction cooktop, French refrigerator, drawer-style dishwasher, a deep sink with pull-out faucet, a really great oven. In other words, a kitchen that’s well equipped to meet the household’s culinary requirements.

But, many clients also ask, wouldn’t it be great if it did not look too much like a “kitchen?”

The key to creating a room with a dual personality is a design strategy that understands and embraces the desired result. Efficiency and convenience don’t have to look utilitarian, as the elegant room above attests.

The goal is a beautifully functioning kitchen that welcomes guests and fulfills the family’s needs. Begin the process with the idea that you are going to design an elegant and user-friendly room to accommodate entertaining, meal preparation and family time.

Mixing finishes, colors, counter heights and cabinet depths as shown in the room above produces a result that is miles beyond what we think of as uniform “kitchen cabinet.”

Choose freestanding cabinetry and furnishings with furniture-like characteristics such as molding, feet, and valances. Pay attention to details. Create custom and distinctive looks by adding fluted columns, cornices, corbels, inlays or double rolled edges on counters and island tops.

And, remember. Island seating can be elegant and comfortable. Pass on those traditional bar stools in favor of upholstered seating with chair backs. Select wall and window treatments like flowing drapes or Roman shades to present a finished look that is at once softer and subtly formal. Consider hardwood flooring you can extend into adjoining rooms. When you are ready for a change, it’s just a matter of refinishing.

Vary and layer the lighting. Task lighting, display lighting and accent lighting should all be part of the mix. Combine recessed ceiling fixtures with a chandelier over an island. Install dimmers to provide the right lighting for breakfast, after-school snacks and cocktail hour.

Finally, add touches that reflect your personal style. Hang artwork and display artifacts or family photographs. Voila! A kitchen that looks like…home.
