Lighten Up: Consider the Many Looks of White

02.22.2011

Not too long ago, the white kitchen was often viewed as “not.”  It was not sophisticated, not the first thing that came to mind when you heard the term “luxury kitchen,” and not thought of as a versatile, exciting style.

Those days are certainly over. The luxury kitchen of 2011 can incorporate white in a number of chic, classic and surprising ways. Contrary to concerns of kitchen eras past, white does play well with others – including stainless, light and dark woods, bright painted furnishings and deep-hued granite countertops. It can take top billing with all white cabinetry and matching appliances, or it can be a brilliant supporting player, creating a stunning contrast to gleaming stainless or rich cherry.

Keep in mind that the hue can set the tone. If you are planning a modern kitchen, you may want to turn to very white whites. Softer eggshell or cream shades will generally give you a more classic or traditional feel.

How can you incorporate white into your luxury kitchen? Let’s count some of the ways.

Use white as a room opener. The white cabinetry and walls in the kitchen shown above beautifully reflect the light to create an ultra bright effect.  The dark wood floors heighten the drama. This is a great approach for narrow or darker rooms that have small or few windows.

What’s black and white and sleek all over?  This block style cabinet below uses a cuff of white to create a look that is utilitarian, yet sleek and elegant. It’s definitely not your gram’s white kitchen.

Maybe your kitchen design philosophy is that more is more, when it comes to textures and colors. As the room below attests, white cabinetry is the perfect foil for bright cabinet interiors, accent walls, and a custom stainless table with formal love seat-style bench.

There is no question that white is an enduring tradition in kitchen design. The secret of its success through the years appears to be its chameleon-like ability to become all things to all kitchens.
