Dream Kitchen Meets Budget Reality

09.21.2011

In the case of kitchen remodeling, your eyes may be bigger than your bank account. The fact is, you can achieve the kitchen you’ve been dreaming about and stay within your budget.

Know your needs. What you want and what you need in your new kitchen may be two distinct lists. Start with your top 10 needs. Hone in on those needs by answering the questions: Who uses your kitchen? How do you use your kitchen?

Do you have small children in the home or people with special needs? Is there an everything-from-scratch or gourmet cook in the house?  Do you plan to entertain frequently? The answers to these questions will help you discover what kinds of seating, storage, counter and preparation areas are required. Cover your basic needs first and add in the “extras” as budget permits.

Have a plan. Your kitchen design team doesn’t expect you to have all the answers. They are there to actualize your vision. The clearer and more defined that vision is, the more time and money you can save on the design process. Come to your first meeting with at least some basic parameters and a general plan you and your designers can fine tune together. Is your style traditional, transitional or contemporary? What colors are musts and must nots? Do you prefer the look of wood, white cabinetry or stainless?

Understand the quote. As your design and production team provides you with quotes, listen and ask questions. Make sure you understand what the quote encompasses, and what it might not include. A common cause of overspending stems from misunderstanding what your kitchen is really going to cost.

Get the “look” for less. If exotic woods and precious metal detailing are on your wish list, but not in budget, turn to your design team for creative alternatives. The artisans of Neff of Chicago are on the cutting edge in terms of producing finishes and processes that replicate the look of woods and metals, at very affordable price points. Neff of Chicago leads the way in the development of unique finishes, such as holographic pigments (shown on the island above) that change color when you view them in different light or at varying angles.

In fact, Neff of Chicago offers clients10 different price levels determined by cost of materials used, door style, exclusivity of design and amount of hand detailing and grain matching required.

A luxurious and functional kitchen doesn’t have to break the budget. The more you can define your vision and articulate your needs early in the process, the easier it will be for your design partner to help you create the dream kitchen you can afford.
